Air-water syringe

Also called: three-way syringe, triplex syringe, A/W syringe

A handheld tip that sprays air, water or a mist of both.

The air-water syringe is the pistol-like tool on the delivery unit with two buttons: one for air, one for water, and both together for spray. It rinses the mouth, dries teeth and clears the mirror. The tip is often disposable.

How to spot it

  • A metal handle with two buttons and a thin bent tip, on a coiled hose at the delivery unit or assistant's side.

What it is used for

  • Rinse and dry teeth during treatment; dry teeth before sealants or fluoride as directed.
  • Flush air and water through it for 20 to 30 seconds after each patient.

Safety and care

  • Use a new disposable tip for each patient, or heat-sterilize reusable tips.
  • Cover the handle with a barrier, changed after each patient.
  • Never point it at a patient's eyes.
