Ultrasonic or piezo scaler unit

Also called: Cavitron, power scaler, magnetostrictive scaler, piezoelectric scaler

A power scaler whose vibrating tip knocks off tartar while water cools it.

A power scaler vibrates a thin metal tip very fast to break up calculus (tartar). Water flows over the tip to cool it and flush debris, which makes a lot of spray. There are two main types: magnetostrictive units (insert sticks with a metal stack) and piezoelectric units (screw-on tips).

How to spot it

  • A small console or a built-in unit with a handpiece on a cord, a foot pedal and water and power dials.
  • Inserts or tips stored in a cassette or tray.

What it is used for

  • The hygienist uses it to remove calculus and biofilm; the assistant keeps HVE close to catch spray.
  • Flush the waterline through it for 20 to 30 seconds after each patient.

Safety and care

  • Inserts, tips and handpiece sleeves are sterilized between patients per the manufacturer.
  • Use HVE to cut aerosol; wear mask and eye protection.
  • Ask the dentist or hygienist about patients with older cardiac devices; follow the manufacturer's warnings.
