Dismissing the patient
Also called: sitting the patient up
Raise the chair slowly and let the patient sit a moment before standing.
At the end of the visit, move the light away, remove the napkin and eyewear, and raise the chair back slowly. Have the patient sit upright for a short time before standing, because getting up fast after lying back can make some people dizzy or faint (postural hypotension). Then lower the chair and move the armrest so they can step out easily.
How to spot it
- Dizziness, paleness or sweating when the patient sits up.
What it is used for
- Check the patient's face for paste or debris and offer a tissue or mirror.
Safety and care
- If the patient feels faint, have them lie back and alert the clinician.
