Desensitizer

Also called: desensitizing agent, sensitivity treatment

Products that calm tooth sensitivity by blocking exposed dentin.

Sensitive teeth usually have exposed dentin with tiny open tubes leading toward the nerve. In-office desensitizers seal or plug those tubes. Examples include fluoride varnish, resin sealers and glutaraldehyde-HEMA solutions. At home, potassium nitrate toothpaste calms the nerve over a few weeks.

How to spot it

  • Small bottles or unit doses labeled desensitizer, applied with a microbrush.

What it is used for

  • Applied by the clinician to the sensitive area after cleaning and drying.

Safety and care

  • Some contain glutaraldehyde or resin; avoid skin and gum contact beyond the area and follow the label.
