Disclosing solution or tablets

Also called: disclosing agent, plaque dye

A dye that stains plaque so patients can see where they missed.

Disclosing agents are dyes in a liquid, gel or chewable tablet that color plaque (the sticky germ layer on teeth) pink, red or purple. Some two-tone products show older plaque in a different color. They make home-care teaching easy to see.

How to spot it

  • Small bottles, swabs or tablets; bright red or purple.

What it is used for

  • Apply before oral hygiene instruction or before polishing, as the clinician directs.

Safety and care

  • It stains lips and clothing and may stain some tooth-colored fillings; apply lip lubricant and protect clothing.
