Etchant (phosphoric acid gel)

Also called: etch, acid etch, conditioner

An acid gel that roughens enamel so sealants and composites can bond.

Etchant is usually 35% to 37% phosphoric acid gel, often colored blue so you can see it. It makes tiny pores in enamel that sealants and bonding agents grip. The time on the tooth (often 15 to 60 seconds) follows the product's directions.

How to spot it

  • A small syringe of blue or green gel with a thin needle-like tip.

What it is used for

  • Apply only where the dentist or hygienist directs, rinse thoroughly with HVE running, and keep the area dry.
  • Etched enamel looks chalky and frosted when dry.

Safety and care

  • It is an acid: protect the patient's eyes, lips and soft tissue, and wear gloves and eye protection.
  • If saliva touches the etched surface, tell the clinician; it may need to be re-etched.
