1. Transport used instruments
Also called: take the tray back
Carry used instruments to the dirty side in a closed, puncture-resistant container.
Right after the patient leaves, used instruments are placed in a container at the chair and carried to the receiving (dirty) side of the sterilization area. A cassette with a lid or a covered, puncture-resistant, labeled container keeps sharp tips from poking anyone along the way.
How to spot it
- Closed instrument cassettes or a covered tub marked with the biohazard symbol.
What you do
- Throw away disposables and put sharps in the sharps container at the chair first.
- Keep your utility gloves on and carry the container, not loose instruments.
Safety and care
- Never carry loose sharp instruments in your hands or pockets.
