Surgical curette
Also called: bone curette, socket curette, Lucas curette, Molt curette
An angled spoon-shaped instrument that cleans soft tissue out of a tooth socket.
A surgical curette is an angled, double-ended spoon. It scrapes out granulation tissue (soft inflamed tissue), small cysts and debris from a socket or bony defect.
How to spot it
- Larger, deeper spoon than a restorative excavator; double-ended and angled.
- Not the same as a periodontal curette, which has a long thin blade.
What it is used for
- Cleaning sockets after extraction.
Safety and care
- Critical item (it goes into soft tissue or touches bone): clean it, package it and heat-sterilize it after every patient.
