Operatory turnover (between patients)
Also called: room turnover, breakdown and setup, room clean
The routine for cleaning the room and setting it up for the next patient.
Turnover follows a dirty-to-clean order. With PPE and utility gloves on: flush handpieces, scaler and air-water syringe for 20 to 30 seconds; throw away disposables and put sharps in the sharps container; close and carry instruments to the sterilization area; remove barriers; clean and disinfect any uncovered or soiled surfaces. Then take off PPE, clean your hands, place fresh barriers and set out the next sterile tray.
What you do
- Follow your office turnover checklist in the same order every time so nothing is skipped.
Safety and care
- Leave the disinfectant wet for its full contact time.
- Keep the treatment area free of extra supplies so it is easier to clean.
