6. Package with an indicator inside
Also called: wrap, bag, pouch
Put instruments in pouches, wraps or wrapped cassettes, with a chemical indicator inside.
Packaging lets steam in during the cycle and keeps germs out afterward. Options include paper or plastic peel pouches, sterilization wrap, and perforated cassettes that are then wrapped. Every package gets an internal chemical indicator, and if you cannot see it through the package, an external indicator (such as indicator tape) goes on the outside too.
How to spot it
- Peel pouches with a printed indicator stripe, blue wrap, and cassettes with wrap and tape.
What you do
- Open hinged instruments and leave them unlocked.
- Use packaging made for your type of sterilizer, and do not overstuff pouches.
