Matrix band

Also called: band, Tofflemire band, sectional matrix

A thin metal strip that forms a temporary wall while a filling is placed.

A matrix band is a thin strip of metal (or clear plastic for some composites). It wraps around the tooth to act as the missing wall while filling material is packed in, then comes off once the material is in place. Bands come in different shapes and heights.

How to spot it

  • Thin, flexible, shiny strip with a curved shape; universal bands look like a flattened smile.

What it is used for

  • Loaded into a Tofflemire retainer, or held by a ring in sectional systems.

Safety and care

  • Single-use (disposable) item: use it on one patient, then throw it away. Never clean and reuse it.
  • Edges are thin and can cut gloves and skin; dispose of used bands in a sharps container if your office treats them as sharps.
