Wedges (wood or plastic)
Also called: interproximal wedge, matrix wedge
A small triangular piece placed between teeth to hold the band tight at the gumline.
After the matrix band is in, a small triangular wedge is pushed between the teeth near the gum. It holds the band tight against the tooth so filling material does not leak out, and it spreads the teeth slightly. The wide (base) side goes toward the gum.
How to spot it
- A small triangle-shaped stick of wood or plastic, often color-coded by size.
What it is used for
- Placed with cotton pliers or a hemostat after the band is placed.
Safety and care
- Single-use (disposable) item: use it on one patient, then throw it away. Never clean and reuse it.
