Periosteal elevator (e.g., #9 Molt)
Also called: Molt 9, periosteal, tissue elevator
A double-ended blade that lifts gum and its lining off bone.
The periosteum is the thin layer that covers bone. A periosteal elevator slides under the gum and periosteum to lift them off the bone as a flap (a lifted section of gum). The #9 Molt has a pointed end to start and a broad rounded end to continue. It can also hold the flap back.
How to spot it
- Double-ended: one narrow pointed end and one wider rounded end, both thin and flat.
What it is used for
- Reflecting a flap; loosening gum around a tooth before extraction; retracting tissue.
Safety and care
- Critical item (it goes into soft tissue or touches bone): clean it, package it and heat-sterilize it after every patient.
